Car Track Days Questions Answered

Car Track Days Questions Answered

Using your vehicle on circuit is subject to rules and requirements. Although there are no speed restrictions and many of the laws of the road do not apply - a racing circuit is a controlled environment and there are many elements you need to know.

These FAQs cover the questions that we are asked most often, including those related to COVID-19.

Current COVID distancing measures

Click HERE to download a summary document that details all the safety measures currently in place for trackdays. In addition, here are some frequently asked questions:

  • Can we camp?

Overnight camping is permitted at all MSV circuits (except Donington Park and Bedford Autodrome) the night before or nights in-between consecutive events.

    Bedford - No camping
    Brands - Free
Cadwell - Free April-Oct. £5 all other months. No camping Dec & Jan
    Donington - No camping
Oulton Park - Camping is free the evening before from April-Oct but not available all other months
Snetterton - Free April-Oct and £5 all other months

  • What changes are there for additional drivers and passengers?

We prefer for all additional drivers and passengers to be paid for prior to the event in order to minimise exposure to our team. If you need to add options after booking this will need to be done with us by phone in good time 0343 4533000

  • How does the online check-in and briefing work?

We send a 'final instructions' email out twice prior to each track day. The first one is around a week before and the second a working day before. This email will contain comprehensive information on your track day and will feature a link for online check-in and briefing. This is mandatory.

Each participant must check in using this link prior to attending. This involves completing an online indemnity and briefing for all drivers. You should complete the indemnity/check-in straight away. You will then need to click the same link again 24 hours prior to your track day to access the compulsory safety briefing. If you have booked other drivers and passengers you will need to forward the final joining instructions email to them so they can click the same link to register - using their own email and details. Passengers will need to complete the online check-in but not the briefing.

Our office is open from Monday to Friday 8:30-18:00 (Closed Bank Holidays) should you need us in advance of your track day: trackdays@msv.com

  • Are spectators or helpers allowed to attend?

From the 19th July spectators are permitted.

At Bedford Autodrome spectators (min age 16) are £10 (booked as a passenger) due to its unusual site layout.

  • Can I hire a helmet?

From the 19th July helmet hire is available. We recommend you supply your own.

  • Can we still purchase food and drink on site?

Yes - our restaurants are open. We request a fase mask when being served.

All customers are welcome to bring their own food and drink to the circuit.

  • What if I have to Isolate?

You should not attend a trackday if you (or someone you live with) has symptoms of COVID-19, you have tested positive or you are required to self-isolate. If this applies, contact us as soon as possible. If you develop COVID-19 symptoms whilst participating in an event, or you are contacted by NHS Test and Trace and informed you need to self-isolate, you should leave the venue immediately and avoid any close contact with others

  • Is the reward card scheme still running?

From Sept the Reward Card returns. Customers request a Reward Card during the event at the registration desk. At each trackday main drivers will need to ask for the card to be stamped. After the second stamp the card is handed in.

We will then cross reference the details when received at HQ and email you as soon as we can with your unique 10% discount code. Then you can make the booking online with the discount. We are unable to apply the discount after booking.

Other General Faqs

Here's a range of questions that we are typically asked about trackdays.

  • How do I booking using a credit/voucher

We have a dedicated page with details HERE

  • What are your terms and conditions?

Our booking terms and conditions have a dedicated page. Shoukd anything be unclear, please call us before booking and we will do our best to help: 0843 453 3000*

    More information

  • What happens if the weather is poor?

It is very rare that we will have to cancel an event due to adverse weather conditions.

If the circuit is deemed unsafe by the event team we will delay circuit activity until it is safe to proceed. Our events do take place if it is wet. If the circuit is deemed unsafe to run without any circuit activity taking place then we will transfer your booking to a suitable alternative date or issue a credit note.

Unfortunately, we cannot rely on the weather forecast in most cases and the decision not to run is most frequently made on the day of the event.

  • What if I am late or forget my licence?

Don't worry. Your place is safe. Should you arrive late, please report to an MSVT member of staff, where arrangements will be made for you to be individually registered and sighted. Please note that you will lose track time if you do arrive late and you will need to wait for a member of the team to be available.

If you do not have your licence available you will need to use the online DVLA licence check service to prove you have a valid licence. You will need to go to www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence and go through the process and choose the option to share/print your licence entitlements and bring this with you along with official photo ID such as a passport. We cannot verify race licences on the day.

  • What happens if I keep running off circuit?

This information applies to all our events. There are two parts. Firstly if you go off circuit or spin you must come into the pits immediately and report to the marshal. If not you will be black flagged.

We need to check your car is ok before continuing, discuss your error and note your wristband number. If you go off/spin again the car may be excluded from the remainder of the day at the discretion of the Chief instructor. An out of control car puts yourself and others at risk.

The second part is putting one or more wheels off the outer 'limits of the circuit' i.e beyond the white lines. We have the following system in place which runs hand in hand with Motorsport UK regulations: You are now permitted to drive on the track asphalt up to and including the white line, and on the full extent of any kerbs (marked red/white). However you are not permitted to put a wheel beyond the white lines or kerbs.

If anyone does not comply, the following actions will be taken by the circuit:

    • 1st infringement Black/white driving standards flag warning
    • 2nd infringement Black flag, report to control tower, final warning without penalty
    • 3rd infringement Black flag, 20 minute track time exclusion
    • Further infringements Black flag, 20 minute track time exclusion

Decisions by circuit staff are final with no right of appeal against any penalty or right to review evidence. If track limits regulations are abused, especially in a repeated and/or deliberate manner MSV will exclude both the car and driver individually and MSV with no refund or compensation.

Please keep it on the black stuff.

  • Can I use my own recording equipment?

Yes you can as long as cameras and other equipment are safely and securely attached to the car only using mounting systems specifically designed for that purpose. Professional 'designed specifically for the purpose' suction mounts/adhesive mounts need a secondary secure fixing such as a tether.

The event team do reserve the right to insist on adjustments or refuse use of the equipment if they deem it unsuitable/unsafe.

  • Do you have a waiting list if a track day is full?

Yes. Go onto the booking page of your chosen track day and click the reserve button. A box will pop up for you to enter basic contact details.

If a space becomes available we will email everyone on the reserve list with a link to book online. This system will run up until one working day prior to the track day.

  • Circuit facilities - are all the venues the same?

In general the services and facilities are broadly the same across all the MSV circuits, but there are some differences. Please click the circuits page for the specific circuit details.

There are catering facilities available at most of our events where breakfast, lunch and teas and coffees etc. are usually available.

At some venues there are fuel pumps on site for track day use. However, at other circuits there are petrol stations within a close proximity of the circuit, so please ask any member of staff for directions.

Camping is available at 'most' circuits the night before. Free in the summer and £5 off season.

Circuit access is typically from 6:30/7:00 in the morning for day events and 15:00 for evenings.
